Third Annual Love Letters Campaign

Posted on February 8th, 2016

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, the third annual Love Letters campaign is underway! Everyone likes to receive a card or letter for the Valentine's holiday, but unfortunately, that doesn't always happen. The Love Letters campaign aims to solve that problem by encouraging young people to create handmade cards to send to homebound seniors nationwide.

DoSomething.org is behind the campaign, as the largest organization for young people promoting social change in the world. They have over 4.9 million members in 130 countries, and have set out to create volunteer campaigns to take on "any cause, anytime, anywhere."

Helping to share some Valentine's love with older adults certainly seems like a worthwhile cause. Based on a study conducted by University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), researchers found that 18 percent of seniors live alone, while 43 percent report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Loneliness may actually contribute to a decline in health, and isolated seniors had a 59 percent greater risk of mental and physical decline compared to their more social counterparts, according to the UCSF study.

To help spread the love, DoSomething.org has partnered with Meals on Wheels America, which provides over a million meals each day to senior citizens who are homebound due to limited mobility. The cards made throughout the campaign will be distributed with meal deliveries to Meals on Wheels recipients across the U.S.

In the first year of the campaign in 2014, DoSomething.org members created over a quarter of a million Valentine's Day cards. Now in its third year, the organization continues to promote the effort, even offering a $5,000 scholarship entry for every three cards created after the first one. The scholarship winner will be picked randomly through a lottery. For more information and to sign up to participate, visit DoSomething.org/loveletters. Cards must be mailed by February 10 to the Meals on Wheels location closest to you in order to be delivered by Valentine's Day. Get creative and share some love!
